Obituary of Bernice Long

Bernice Sample Long of Elizabeth City, NC, age 86, departed for heaven on Dec. 11th at her residence. Born on Jan. 10, 1925, she was the youngest child of the late Henry Francis and Laura Gertrude Pritchard Sample. She married the love of her life – Marion Grier Long (of Huntersville, NC) on Dec 19, 1944. He preceded her in death in 1995. She attended Corinth Baptist Church all of her life and was an active member since 1935 where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Church Secretary, Church Clerk and Church Historian. She graduated from Central High School and was employed by Carolina Telephone & Telegraph, Corinth Baptist Church, Belk Tyler's and the Pasquotank County Home Extension Office from which she retired in 1984. She is survived by her children: Frances Long Stogsdill (Jerry) of Holden, MO and Bruce Long of the residence. Additionally, she is survived by a sister-in-law Rosemary Sample of Idaho, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings: Nell Sample Wood, James Alvin Sample, Wilma Sample Weeks and Myra Sample Datesh; and by numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, NC. Family will greet friends in the lobby of the funeral home following the service. Family will have a private burial at West Lawn. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home and all other times at her residence.
