Julia Haywood

Obituary of Julia Haywood

Julia Jordan Haywood, 83, died October 2nd at The Outer Banks Hospital. She is survived by her husband, three sons, one daughter, and her mother who will be 103 this month. Julia, born in Buffalo City, was owner and operator of Jennifer Alterations. She was named Dare County's Citizen of the Year by the Dare County Board of Commissioners in July 2014 for the many years of volunteer service that she unselfishly gave. Three years ago the Outer Banks Woman's Club established the Julia Haywood Scholarship to honor her. She was co-chairman of the Dare County Angel Gift Project. She loved helping others but nothing was as important to her as her family. Henry Dean Haywood and Julia would have celebrated 66 years of marriage in December. Surviving are children, Phil Ray Haywood (Connie) of Colington, Robert Clayton "Bobby" Haywood (Carol) of Manteo, Terry Haywood Beasley of Currituck, and David Scott Haywood (Penny) of Colington. Her mother, Amy Twiford Jordan, lives in Chesapeake, Va. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marla Dean Haywood; her father, Henry Jordan; and sister, Louise Jordan Lawrence. She is survived by a sister, Sandy Jordan Holloman (Frank) of Florida; a brother, Henry Grandis Jordan (Kathy) of Chesapeake, VA; and her special friend, Gwen A. White of Columbia. She was a proud grandmother, known as "Granny" to Charles Haywood (Marcie), Kari Haywood, Micky Haywood, Katy Jo Haywood Walker (Joe), Mikey Buck Haywood, Jennifer Beasley, and Whitney Haywood. She loved being "Granny" to great-grandchildren: Abby and Caroline Haywood, Leah and Jordan Haywood, Audrey Brickhouse, Carter Collins, and Baylee and Madeline Gail Walker. She was pre-deceased by a great grandson, Ryan Beasley. She appeared to have the energy of people half her age, she was a homemaker, an excellent seamstress, did arts and crafts, was a club leader in the Outer Banks Woman's Club, and active in district and state activities in the General Federation of Women's Club-NC, was active in Colington United Methodist Church, loved the Dare County Angel gift program, and loved helping anyone who needed her. When her children were young - they all were good athletes — she raised money for booster clubs, she served as PTA president, booster club president, worked concession stands, and drove thousands of miles through the years because she never missed a football, basketball, or softball game. Julia had a heart attack last December and her health began declining. She didn't let it get her down and she made sure that she talked with her co-chairman of the Angel Gift program so they would have things organized for this December. Even then, she was thinking of others and wanting to get the job done. The family appreciates all the love and support their family has received, especially from the Colington United Methodist Church and the Colington Volunteer Fire Department. The visitation will be Saturday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo. Funeral services will be Sunday, October 5th, at 2 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home with the burial in the Colington North End Cemetery. A reception will be held following the service at the Colington United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Julia Haywood Scholarship Fund, c/o Outer Banks Woman's Club, P.O. Box 102, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948. Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo is assisting the family with arrangements.
