Obituary of Steven Paul Gettler
Obituary
It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of Paul Gettler, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. Paul was born in St. Catharines, Ontario on July 26, 1952 to Steve and Marie Gettler. He passed away on October 6, 2022 surrounded by his family whom he cherished.
In his youth, Paul was a gifted athlete who excelled at baseball and hockey. It was his name that often appeared in the local newspaper for home runs or goals scored. At an early age, Paul developed a love for fishing in Northern Ontario thanks to his father who took him on fly-in trips and family fishing holidays. Paul continued this tradition with his own boys, Matt and Sean, who were introduced to remote fly-in fishing in the Yukon at a very young age. Anyone who knew Paul knows of his love for Crocodile Lake where the lake trout were said to be as big as crocodiles. For over 30 years, he was up in the Yukon in early June doing what he loved - fishing! Paul was also an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling.
For most of his life, Paul was self-employed as a building contractor. In the late 70's when Fort St. John was booming, he built 110 commercial pole buildings in one year. From there, he continued doing commercial work, houses, renovations, and oilfield maintenance.
Paul was predeceased by his parents, Marie and Steve Gettler; his step-mother, Mary Gettler; and his brother, Robert Gettler.
Paul will be greatly missed by his partner of 49 years, Shelley Nickel; son Matthew (Brittany) and grandson Reed; son Sean (Kalen) and granddaughter Autumn. Paul also leaves to mourn his sisters, Dianne (John) Thiesen, and Susan Delesalle; and brother Michael (Alexis) Gettler.
