Obituary of Elizabeth "Betty" Jean Orcutt
Obituary
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Orcutt, wife, mom, granny, on April 24th, 2023 in Fort St. John.
Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 2nd at 2:00 pm at Hamre’s Funeral Chapel. She will be interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery.
Betty was born on August 24th, 1942 in Lethbridge, Alberta to her parents George and Mary Oswald. Betty was the seventh of eight children. She spent her childhood in or near Warner in southern Alberta. With only 12 years separating the oldest and the youngest, the house Betty grew up in was very busy. A close family that included six brothers, Betty had no choice but to be competitive and hold her ground. She enjoyed playing sports, going to dances, participating in Pioneer Girls, and attending church and Sunday School with the family. In her teen years she worked as a babysitter and house cleaner in her free time.
A young man named Vane Orcutt was friends with two of Betty’s older brothers. Eventually Vane decided to court their youngest sister. Vane and Betty were married in 1959 and worked a farm in southern Alberta. They had their oldest son, Kerry, in 1961. The family moved north when Vane started working in the oil and gas industry. At that time they had their second son, James, in 1963 and their daughter, Jerelyn, in 1967. Vane and Betty settled in Fort St. John in 1971.
Betty is survived by Vane, her devoted and loving husband of almost 64 years; her three children, Kerry (Darla), James (Bev), and Jerelyn (Dale); her grandchildren Kara, Megan (AJ), Andrew (Shae-lynn), Cailem, Tyrell (Lacey), Kathleen, Emily, Sarah and Nicholas; her great-grandchildren Kraden, Camron, Emmynd, Elliotte, Charlie, Laney, Oliver, Loretta, Lexie and Logan; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty is predeceased by her parents, her siblings, and her grandson, Garnett.
A special thank you to Dr. Terri Hopkins for her outstanding care, kindness, compassion, and communication with the family.
Rest in peace, Granny.
