Obituary of Delbert Jay Fleet

Obituary Dad was born November 5, 1929 to Alfred Jay and Florence Fleet in Olds, Alberta. When he was around 11 years old he came to the Peace River area in a covered wagon. His Mom and him cooked for the miners in Hudson Hope and then moved with his Dad into the basement of the Condill as it was being built in 1942. His Dad had him nailing trim on the stair treads to keep him out of trouble. He then went to work for his Uncle Bert Sheffield on the trapline up in the Tuchodi Lake area. At about 16 he went to work on the rigs for Trinity Drilling then found a way to get a truck to haul wood for the rigs. He worked his way to having 9 trucks and that started his businesses. He met Kay Mitchell in 1955 and in 1956 they married and raised 4 boys. He worked many jobs over the years, driving a dump truck hauling coal for Mr. Rescke, guiding and ranching were just a few. Around 1948 he started a ranch at Mile 68 with his brother Ray which they then sold in 1968. Then Dad bought land at Mile 95, worked it for a few years then sold and bought 28 sections on the Upper Cache Road. He sold the ranch in 1984. Dad was an auctioneer, a rodeo announcer, a cattle buyer, a livestock hauler, had an Atco trailer business and a trailer moving business. He was also a proud Shriner for many years. He did like to keep busy. Mom and Dad decided it was time to travel and enjoyed being snowbirds in Mesa Arizona for many years. Dad liked to hunt, fish and tell us about the early years in the Peace country and all his adventures and shenanigans that he got into. Like saving the army nurse from drowning when he was a teenager or sitting on the stairwell of the local speakeasy with his brother Ray trying to fish donuts out of the pot with their hook made of coat hangers. He loved nothing better than when we all invaded his house for family dinners. Deb is survived by his sons: Dan (Kathy) Kelly, Terry (Jorge) and Alfred (Sandra). 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren, with another on the way, sister Darlene (Lou) Balough, sister in law Onie Pitts and numerous nieces and nephews He is predeceased by his wife Kay, parents Jay and Florence Fleet, brother Ray Pitts, sister Lilia (Bud) Southwick, sister Betty (Lake) Southwick He was an amazing Dad, father-in-law and grandfather who will be greatly missed. There will be a Celebration of Life held at the Fort St. John Senior's Hall on Sunday, June 25, 2023 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.
