Obituary of William Lawrence "Bill" Elsey

SPRINGFIELD - William (Bill) Lawrence Elsey, 75, of Springfield, passed away on January 29, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife Violetta (Vi) D. Elsey. Bill was dedicated to protecting the wildlife and environment. He believed in a balance of economic development with environmental protection. He loved to fish, and he loved his cats. He obtained degrees in both English Literature and Wildlife and Fisheries Management. His love for fishing and access to the lake were major factors in moving his antiquarian book business, Leather Stalking Book, to Springfield. In 2005 Bill and Vi lost their home to a fire. The Springfield Fire Department was on the scene within seven minutes. With the outpouring of support, Bill wanted to give back to the community. He joined the Springfield Fire Department, although, due to his health restrictions, he could not go into a burning building. However, he became an Emergency Medical Technician in 2006. He also served the position of Springfield's Town Supervisor for approximately 10 years until he had to resign because of his health. A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at 7:00 pm at the Springfield Fire Hall, 101 Route 29A Springfield Center, NY 13468.
