Tony's dramatic readings of the great works of literature in the classroom were beyond amazing, and he was without question the most literate and cultured person that I have ever met in my life. I will forever be indebted to you, TJ, for the great influence that you had on me, and especially for inspiring me to understand that knowledge for the sake of knowledge is a great thing, and that the more we know about our world and the people in it, the more we will care about them. I will miss you terribly.....and please save me a chair at the pub quiz game up there.

Having been out of the Country for the greater part of the last three months, I have just learned, with great sadness and shock, of the passing of TJ, a long time colleague, associate, and friend. Indeed, Tony was the most unforgettable "character" in my 58 years in Windsor. As the "Best Man" at my wedding in 1968, and the Godfather to my son Stephen, Tony continued throughout the decades to honour us with his presence. His intelligence, wit, and 'caritas' will remain forever in our hearts.
Rest in Peace, Tony, as we all raise a jar of Guiness in your memory.

Having been out of the country for the better part of the last three months, I was profoundly saddened and shocked to learn, upon my return, of TJ's passing. As a teaching colleague, a confidante, and a long time friend, Tony continued to be an authentic inspiration to me and my family throughout the past 56 years. His intelligence, wit, and his deep thinking counsel, truly enriched my life. As the 'Best Man' at my wedding in 1968, and the Godfather to my son Stephen, Tony continued throughout the decades to be an impactful part of our family.
My sincere condolences to his family, and to Jane.
Rest in Peace Tony, as we all raise a jar of Guiness in your memory.

Since leaving Derry for Canada in 1962, our uncle Tony maintained contact with family and friends and returned home every single summer. He was very much a part of our school holidays, entertaining us with stories, songs and one of his party pieces, an impersonation of Mícheál Ó hEithir commentating on the 1967 Aintree Grand National Horse Race, which he memorised word for word! We grew up knowing his friends and former school mates, many with personalities as colourful as Tony’s. We also enjoyed occasional visits from some of his Canadian colleagues and students.
Tony’s final visit to Ireland in 2022 was extra special. It made a lasting impression on the many cousins and friends that he met, as well as my community of Good Shepherd Sisters in Derry. Tony was determined to make the journey and thank God he did.
Rest in peace uncle Tony.

A great Oak has fallen and Derry will welcome this beloved Son back to his native land, for it was there, in the deep dark and very moist soil, that this dear cousin was nurtured. Thus rooted and having found his wings, he journeyed to embrace a different soil which provided his life with a multitude of color.
His interests were wide and varied. He was a great conversationalist and an even better listener.
I am glad Tony passed my way.
May this great gentle man Rest In Peace.

As a young teacher, it was my good fortune to have my small world expanded daily by the intellect, creativity and humour of John McKerral and Tony Johnston. John, Tony, Pat Desmarais, Pauline Boyle and I attended some wild English Department meetings as Elvira Gosselin attempted to pass along the latest directives from “above”. Despite Tony’s disdain for all things administrative, he continued to be kind and patient with me even after I became one of “them”.

Astute, kind, and a skilled wordsmith are among the many words one could use to describe Anthony Johnston. I was privileged to have Tony as a colleague for many years and enjoyed every minute I spent in his company.
May he rest in peace.

Like so many, TJ was one of my high school English teachers. He was such an energetic and enthusiastic person and seemed one of the most successful people I have ever met (since success to me is doing what makes you happy and he clearly loved what he did, from teaching, to running, to impersonating Howard Cosell). I will always remember how we would pounce on some particular word used in class: "What a word! What a wonderful word!" (goes to the black board and writes it) " From the Greek!!"
Then he would share the etymology of the word, helping us to understand how language grows and changes and how the dimly seem connotations of English words relate to these other languages that we never knew how to speak.
He was just a wonderful person.

One of the BEST teachers I ever had!! Mr. Johnston was so kind, smart, and funny and was the kind of teacher that you hope your children get to experience. A Teacher that you could tell truly loved his job, and really cared about each and every student. Mr. Johnston introduced me to some of the best books I have ever read and was always around for a quick chat in between classes, and never thought twice about giving words of encouragement when you needed it. I feel truly grateful that my life path crossed his, and that I was lucky enough to have the experience to be in his class. He is the reason I loved English class. RIP Mr. Johnston and thank you for everything.

Mr. Johnston taught me in 1969-1970. The most incredible English classes I've ever had. He encouraged me to write stories, poems, and lyrics. He saw something in me back then that I only realized many years later. Fly high Mr. Johnston. You were dearly loved, and will be dearly missed.

AHHHH..Mr. Johnston…
So very sad to see this. To be a student in his English Class at Brennan…
His one of a kind way drew you in immediately. Once I graduated he made his
way into Spats Restaurant one day, where he delighted me once a week with a visit, until Spats closed. Never in a hurry, he’d sit for hours reading, engaging
me in a stimulating conversation, enjoying dinner, a nice glass of wine,
finishing with a snifter of scotch.
Years later he found out I was working at Lorelei’s, frequently coming in….
where I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Jane! On the occasions they joined us, they were like family.
I miss those days.
Raise a glass to a man…so much more than a teacher!!! He was an inspiration
who had such an impact on all who were lucky enough to know him
Thinking of you Jane

Sad to learn of my long time friend Tony
We lived in the same building on Giles Boulevard for many years and enjoyed lunches at the local Windsor restaurants
Tony stayed with me in Galway on his many trips on his way to Derry to visit sister Brideen and nephew Michael ( usually around time of Galway racing)
And likewise on my trips back to Canada, Tony put me up at his home on Giles
Tony took a keen interest in the Irish language and accompanied me to Comhrá meetings for chats in Irish
He was always fun to be with and left fond memories with my friends here Slán Tony - - -

Mr. Johnson was an inspirational teacher who instilled a love of literature in me that I hope was imparted to my own students. His sense of humour and dramatic flair made his class one of my favourites. His memorization of class names on day one was classic. Rest in peace knowing you were a major influence to generations of students.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Anthony?
A: Mr. Johnstone was the catalyst for my voracious need to pun at least 3 times a day. He also inspired my desire to understand the etymology of words. My wife and kids thank him. Mr. Johnstone turned English alive in the classroom. He read the books aloud and did his best impressions of the characters. I was fortunate enough to run into him the neighborhood every so often and was able to more than thank him for his passion for teaching. The world of education needs teachers like him. If there is a Poet Society in the afterlife I am sure he is there.

Tony Mr Johnson taught me in 1977-78. He was a great teacher and very colorful character. He made me love literature, especially Shakespeare. Loved going to his class. I likely drove him aliitie nuts as I was a talker he would loudly call out my last name when I was disrupting class. Great memories from our days at Brennan

As a fellow teacher of TJ's at Brennan, I recall his many stories and the love expressed by many of his students. My interaction with him first began through our own in- house Cardinal Quiz in which local feeder elementary schools participated. When Reach for the Top took over, he was the man.
His English classes were legendary But I think that his fervor for Latin and his fight to keep it alive were inspiring.
You will not be forgotten.

Mr. Johnston was my English teacher and his class was the highlight of my day. I think I may have gotten some special treatment seeing as my name is Deirdre and my Mam and Dad are from Ireland. He encouraged me to write a paper on the Irish playwright and poet Brendan Behan and years later I wrote my Masters on his work. Thank you so much Mr. Johnston for inspiring a lifelong love for literature. You are fondly remembered.

Rest in peace. You were such a wonderful teacher of literature. The fact that you used to lend me books to read was just a plus. Since I first heard, I've been trying to remember if you were the teacher who taught Dickens' novels by having us make popsicle stick puppets and use them to act out scenes. Either way you were an inspiration. Condolences to his family.
