Obituary of Melodie Velvet Monka

The family of Melodie Monka of Springside, beloved wife of Wayne Monka, sadly announce her passing on February 17, 2023. She was 55 years of age.

Memorial donations may be made to the Yorkton SPCA (79 7th Ave S, Yorkton, SK S3N 2V6) or to Ovarian Cancer Canada (205-145 Front St. East, Toronto, ON, M5A 1E3) as gifts of remembrance.

Melodie passed away peacefully on February 17, 2023 at the age of 55 years with her three daughters and son by her side. She was married to Wayne for 35 years and he was with her every step of the way through her cancer journey. Melodie’s greatest wish was to be a Nana and we were so fortunate that she was able to meet her six grandchildren, as they were her absolute pride and joy.

Melodie was very selfless and kind, and anyone who met her would describe her this way. Residents and co-workers at the nursing home were touched by her gentle compassion and easygoing nature. Melodie was crazy for all things Christmas, a total book worm, a lover of true crime and enjoyed a good TV binge, whether it be curling, Netflix, or the Hallmark channel. She especially loved the cabin at Good Spirit Lake, any time spent with her children or grandchildren, and road trips or coffee dates with special friends Bev and Kim.

Her stage 4 ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2015 was a shock but everyone marveled at her courage. We were told so many times that she had reached the end, but still she beat so many odds over the years. She was put through so many trials but kept a positive attitude and never ever complained. She fought with everything she had for over 7 years, and we are so incredibly proud of her.

Melodie leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband Wayne, children Shaleen (Tom), Tia (Dan), Caitlin (Micheal), and Luke; grandchildren, Leo, Harper, Nattie, Mac, Bo and Wyatt. She is also survived by her father, Sev Shindle and mother-in-law, Joan Monka as well as her sister, three brothers, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Melodie was predeceased by her mother, Donna Shindle, grandparents Hector and Caroline Hambly and Willie and Anne Shindle.

Special thank you to Aunt Edna Richardson for her spiritual guidance over the years. You gave Melodie countless prayers and much comfort in her final days.

The Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 from Springside Baptist Church with Pastor Richard Kauenhofen officiating. Words of remembrance were given by Sarah Breitkreuz & Sharon Breitkreuz and Edna Richardson read scripture. The organist was Jeanette Kriger and the pianist was Kitty Arndt. Musical selections shared were ‘How Great Thou Art’, ‘Morning Has Broken’ and ‘Go Rest High on That Mountain’. A private family interment followed in the Springside Town Cemetery with Brendan Monka, Tenille Mallett, Jasmine Ueland, Brett Monka, Chloe Shindle and Dallas Shindle serving as casket bearers.
