Obituary of Olga Antonishyn

Olga Antonishyn, resident of the Ituna Pioneer Health Care Centre, widow of Joe Antonishyn, passed away on November 30th 2022. She was 91 years of age. Olga was born on October 9, 1931, in Ituna, to Phillip and Annie Broshko. Mom attended Olga School and Ituna High School. She worked in the local hotel and then the Ituna Hospital. On November 9, 1953, Mom was united in marriage to Joe Antonishyn. Mom and Dad farmed three miles south of Ituna. Due to poor roads, they moved to the Antonishyn homestead, where they farmed, had livestock, and where mom smoked many a sausage. In 1971, Mom and Dad left the farm and moved to Winnipeg to run a corner grocery store. Mom was instrumental in operating the store. She was also a wiz with numbers and had an amazing memory. She could always remember everyone’s wedding anniversary and the birthdates of all of the extended family. Mom enjoyed going to many events happening in the city, Folklorama, parades, fireworks, and parks. She was an active member of St. Peters Parish and the CWL. She loved to celebrate all holidays and birthdays, and was crafty; she crocheted, painted ceramics, and did macrame. In addition to running the store, she raised the four of us kids, always had a garden, was always canning, cooking, and baking, and loved to make homemade soup. Mom believed any day was a good day to make perogies if there were a few potatoes laying around. Mom’s cinnamon buns were always a welcome sight – especially for Larry. She made prized sauerkraut, and her family loved her mustard pickles. Mom worked very hard all of her life, and her focus was always on her family. Her strength and determination were on display until her last days. Mom enjoyed her weekly Bingo, and playing cards (mom was very competitive), and there were often friends sitting around our kitchen table having coffee and lunches. In 1990, the store in Winnipeg was sold and Mom and Dad moved back to Ituna, and mom was able to retire. She then had the time to tend to and enjoy an even bigger garden. She was a member of St. Stanislaus church and volunteered for the church and lodge. Dad took sick in 1991, moved into the Pioneer Lodge, and passed away in 1996. Mom remained in the house in town until 2017 when her health declined, then moved to the Pioneer Lodge. We are very thankful to the Lodge staff for their excellent care and compassion. The lodge volunteers came and sang Christmas carols to mom in the days before she passed because they knew Mom loved to sing. It was so appreciated by her and us. Mom leaves to cherish her memory, her children; Christine, Larry, Danny and JoAnne. Grandchildren; Dwayne (Tricia), Brian, Chelsey, Eric, and Alex, and Great Grandchildren, Jack, Lily, Xander and Kingston, brother Peter Broshko, and many nieces and nephews. Mom was predeceased by her parents, her husband Joe, her sisters; Pearl, Kay, Rosie, Gloria, her brothers John and Bernie, Sister-in-law Gloria Broshko, brothers-in-law Bronie, Walter, Bill & Walter K.; sisters-in-law Rose Olenik, Rose Antonishyn, and son-in-law Rick Reuther. 'A mother holds her children's hands for a while, their hearts forever.' The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, December 6th 2022 from St. St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Ituna with Rev. Fr. Albert Schmitz officiating. A rosary service preceeded the Mass, led by Lillian Antonishyn. Lay-readers were Audrey Dimini and Eric Boucher, and Alex Boucher was the Crossbearer. Organist, Paulette Van derHelm led members of the Parish Choir and the congregation in the singing of the hymns 'How Great Thou Art', 'Amazing Grace', 'Here I Am Lord', 'May Flights of Angels' and 'Sing A New Song'. The interment took place in the Ituna RC Cemetery with Chelsey Antonishyn, Alex and Eric Boucher, Shaun Broshko and Dwayne Reuther serving as the casketbearers. A memorial luncheon followed in the lower hall of the church. Those wishing to leave a condolence message can do so at baileysfuneralhome.com
