Steffie Derkach was born February 20, 1932 on the family farm in the Spondon district near Ituna. Steffie was the oldest of six children. Her twin brother, Stephen, passed away at the age of seven months. Other siblings to join the family were her brother, Bill, and sisters, Olga, Tess and Helen. When Steffie was 18 years old, she married Nick Slywka on July 16, 1950 and they settled on their new farm and farmhouse in the Herzel district near Lipton. Steffie and Nick were blessed with four children; Julian, Larry, Edward, and Donna. They lived in their small farmhouse until 1964 when they moved to a new house in the town of Lipton. Steffie's life was full and busy with gardening, baking, cooking and involvement in her family, community and church. For many years, both Steffie and Nick drove school bus. Steffie also worked in home care for many years. They resided in Lipton until 2004, when they moved to a senior's residence in Ituna. After Nick's passing in 2006, Steffie lived in care homes in Balcarres, Fort Qu'Appelle, and in recent years, Regina. Steffie was a hard worker and her greatest joy was her family. She never arrived at someone's home without an ice cream pail of scuffles, bags of perogies and cabbage rolls and a rhubarb dessert. There are many fond memories of together family times, where food, laughter, conversation and love were shared. The family would like to thank the staff of the Regina Lutheran Home for the wonderful care they have given mom for many years. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, December 13th 2022 from Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ituna with Rev. Fr. Basil Malowany officiating. Crossbearer was great grandson Erik Mercredi. Tributes to Steffie were given by grandchildren Michelle Mercredi, Jonathan Slywka & Jason Kish. The interment followed in the Parish Cemetery with Steffie's eight grandchildren as the casketbearers. A memorial luncheon followed in the Parish Hall. Memorials in Steffie's name may be made to the SK Alzheimers Society as gift of remembrance. Service Details.
