Johnny (John) Richard Honeycutt, of Pensacola FL, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2022 at the Covenant Hospice Unit of West Florida Hospital at the age of 86. John was born on February 17, 1936 in Davidson, NC to the late A. L. and Clara Hager Honeycutt. John was a graduate of the first graduating class of North Mecklenburg High School. He married Jacqueline Simril and entered the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Freising, Germany where he worked on a radar site. John went on to work for Burroughs Computer Company in 1960 as a Field Engineer working at United States government sites including NORAD built deep inside Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs. John was a pioneer in computer science. He rose in the ranks and became the International Vice President of Field Engineering. During this time he traveled the world. He was instrumental in development of the national defense network, the space program, the IRS system, and foreign Governments conversion from paper records to computer technologies. In 1977, after many years of international travel and living in Detroit, Michigan, he moved his family to Tallahassee, Florida where he took over as Branch Field Engineering Manager. In June of 1981 he married Cheri Huber. In March of 1982 John was promoted to Regional Field Engineering manage and they moved to Tampa. Three years later John was promoted to Regional Field Engineering Manager in Atlanta. John ended his 31 year career with Burroughs, which merged with Sperry and became Unisys Corporation, in 1991. After retirement, John, and Cheri, moved to Pensacola, Florida where they enjoyed many years of sailing and traveling. John reconnected with his childhood and high school friends and enjoyed the yearly luncheons in Davidson, NC. While John achieved many accomplishments during his life, he remained a humble man and was loved and admired by his wife, family, friends and classmates. John loved music and played guitar in a band with his brother Gary while they were in high school and also when they were stationed together in the Air Force. He loved watching football and was a life-long Green Bay Packers fan. He also loved to watch Alabama and Florida State College Football. John is survived by his best friend, and loving wife of 41 years, Cheri Honeycutt. He was a loving, patient and nurturing father to his son Richard Lee Honeycutt (Barbara), his daughter Tina Lynn King (Jeff), and three step-sons, Jason Huber (Tammy), Joshua Huber, and Justin Huber (Edie). He delighted in being a grandfather to Ryan Huber, Aaron King, Megan Huber, Lindsey King Ibarra, Madison Huber, Justin Chase Huber, Kendall Huber, Devon Huber, Nicholas Huber, Darby Huber and Dylan Huber. He was also a wonderful big brother to his sisters, Judy Honeycutt Hefner, and Cookie Honeycutt Lucas. Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister Joyce Honeycutt Sloop, brother, Gary Honeycutt and first wife, Jacqueline Simril Honeycutt. A small intimate Celebration of Life was held by his wife and children per his wishes. Memorial Donations can be made in his name to the Cancer or Hospice organization of your choice.
