Obituary of joan glenne mills

Joan Glenne Dunlavy Summers Mills, 88, of Foley, Alabama passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. She was born in Three Oaks, Michigan on May 15, 1934 to Paul and Dorothy Dunlavy. She graduated from Newton High School in Newton, Kansas, class of 1952. Joan was a dedicated military wife and homemaker. The military lifestyle allowed their family to travel and live all over the world. She was a devout Presbyterian and remained very active in various churches and community charities throughout her life. Her hobbies included challenging friends and family to a game of cribbage and crocheting beautiful blankets, toys and stuffed animals for each of her grandchildren and great children. They will treasure these for years to come. She loved her family immensely. Upon her retirement as an executive secretary at IBM, she and Larry enjoyed their time tending to their small ranch in Texas where they delighted in riding horses and caring for their small animals. After the passing of her husband, it became important for her to be close to her daughters and grandchildren, so she relocated to Foley, Alabama. Joan was a tireless fighter, always with a good sense of humor and grace despite her battle with a challenging illness. She is survived by her sister, Virginia Mottern (Hugh) and her brother, William D. Dunlavy (DeAnn); four children, Gene H. Summers (Brenda), Scherry L. Barnett (Mike), Brenda J. Roughton (Donny), and Raymond Scott Summers (Connie); grandchildren Robert Summers (Jenny), Christopher Summers, Morgan Barnett (Annmarie), Hollie Ellis (Justin), Reanna Fielden (Derek), Erin Womack (Dustin), and Curtis Roughton (Kayla); and 17 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Larry Mills, retired Navy, and son Brian D. Summers. Our family would like to thank the caregivers at Sandy Ridge Centers for Rehabilitation and Healing for their amazing care, love, and generosity shown to our mother. Inurnment will take place at a private ceremony to be held at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
