Obituary of Vernon Marshall MacPherson
With heavy hearts we regret to announce the death of Vernon Marshall MacPherson, 91, of Manchester Guysborough Co., who passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 3rd, 2022 in Guysborough Memorial Hospital - a devoted husband, father and friend to all he knew. Vernon was the only child of the late John and Carrie (McCall) MacPherson. Born in Boylston and attended school in middle Manchester, Vernon worked early on in life as a pulp cutter and also drove for Zink’s taxi for a short while in Antigonish. He went on to become a heavy equipment operator and finished out his career with the Dept. of Transportation.
Vernon leaves behind his wife Jean of 68 years, sons Roddie (Carol), Kenny (Caroline), daughter Kathy, grandchildren Angela, Rachael, Rhonda, Ian, Daniel, Devin, Gregory, Tyler and Emma, in addition to 9 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. Vernon looked forward to visits from the grandkids and nothing put a smile on his face more than one of them sitting on his knee. Vernon was predeceased by sons Johnny and Wayne and grandson Stephen.
Vernon was known as a meticulous man who took pride in anything he did which was evident when driving passed his home in Manchester. His hedge was the first thing noticed by those passing by. Vernon also played guitar and before the passing of his uncle Hoyt, the two of them could be found at local dances or in someone’s kitchen playing for all who listened. Vernon loved playing cards and recounting stories from his younger years with life long friends like Ransom Hart and Gordon Pyle, just to name a couple. Their keen sense of humour and propensity to get into harmless mischief left him with countless stories to be told. Despite all of these things, Vernon’s true passion was the time he spent in the woods hunting. With the closing of each hunting season, he would immediately begin to plan for the next year. This obsession started early in Vernon’s life and he passes it along to his sons who, despite their best efforts, will never live up to his accomplishments.
Vernon will be remembered by all as a kind, caring, compassionate, gentle man who treated everyone the same. He always gave more than he received, taught without trying to teach and gave guidance when needed the most. Special thanks to Dr. Ranjini Mahendrarajah and the staff of Guysborough Memorial Hospital for their kind care and support.
