Obituary of Henry Garlon Cassel

CDR. HENRY GARLON CASSEL USCG RETIRED Henry Garlon Cassel, CDR USCG (retired) aged 88 of S. Hughes Blvd. Elizabeth City, NC, passed away February 16, 2003 CDR. Cassel was born in Newnan, GA, and moved to Sylacauga, AL, where he lived and attended school. He was the son of late Lonnie Wales Cassel and Mary Morrow Cassel. He was the husband of Martha Ives Cassel for 59 years. CDR. Cassel served in the United States Coast Guard as an Aircraft Pilot from 1939-1969 and logged over 10,000 hour of flying. During this time he participated in numerous Air-Sea rescues and was awarded several commendations. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. He is survived by his half brother Lonnie Wales Cassel of Alabama; two sister in laws, Carolyn Scott and husband Bill of Palm Bay, FL; Annie Horton and husband, Jack of Elizabeth City, NC; several nieces and nephews. His grandmother, Evie Pearl Cassel predeceased him. Services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at 2:00 PM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
