Obituary of Samuel Irving Phillips

Elizabeth City Samuel ‘Sam’ Phillips, age 88, of 117 Casey Street, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Chowan Hospital. Mr. Phillips, a native of Perquimans County, NC, was the husband of Lina Belle Cartwright Phillips of the residence and the son of the late Samuel Clarence Phillips and Mary White Phillips. He was a furniture salesman, the owner and operator of Sam’s Bargain Store, a US Army veteran of WW II, and a member of New Life Assembly of God Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Mary P. and Thomas Dornfried of Hertford, NC, Sue and Gary Michael of Elizabeth City, NC; one son and his wife, Dr. Richard and Mary Phillips of Big Stone Gap, VA: a sister, Nina Maude White of Edenton, NC; and five grandchildren, Gary Michael, Jr., Jennifer Michael, John Dornfried, Andrew Dornfried, and Martha Phillips. A funeral service will be Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 11:00 AM in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Clay Manos and the Rev. Bobby Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Friday at the funeral home, immediately after the service in the funeral home lobby, and at other times at the residence.
