Obituary of George R. Harrell

George R. Harrell Retired Rural Mail Carrier George R. Harrell, age 82, of 590 Body Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. He was the son of the late Orpha and Brooks Harrell Sr. Mr. Harrell was a veteran of World War II, was at the invasion of Normandy, and received the Purple Heart and Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 23 years as a rural mail carrier and was a member of Providence Baptist Church. Mr. Harrell is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sawyer Harrell of the residence; two daughters, Faye Gray and husband Charles of Elizabeth City, NC, and Eleyse Griffin and husband Simon of Williamston; two grandsons, Michael Gray and wife Darlene of Elizabeth City, NC, and Scott Gray of Elizabeth City, NC; a granddaughter, Susan Griffin of Williamston, NC; and a great grandson Luke Gray. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at 2:00 pm in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Wellons and Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at the funeral home and immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence.
