Obituary of H. David Leake

SOUTHERN SHORES, NC HARRISON DAVID LEAKE, 74, of Southern Shores, NC died Friday, August 22, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Leake, born in Bristol, PA, was a 15 year resident of the Outer Banks. He previously lived in Manhasset and retired as a Teacher of Natural Sciences at the Manhasset Junior/Senior High School, where he taught for the last 25 years of his career. He was chairman of the first Education Committee at the Nags Head Nature Conservancy and served on the board of directors for 6 years. He worked as a volunteer for Pea Island Nature Preserve, served as President of Audobon, was a Federal bird-bander and was a frequent lecturer at local schools and the aquarium on the Outer Banks. Throughout his life he touched the lives of many people with his numerous talents, humor and passion for life. He will be remembered as a dedicated husband, loving father and grandfather, a loyal and caring friend, a gifted and loved teacher, an enthusiastic and inspired naturalist, and an avid volunteer for his community. Mr. Leake is survived by his wife, Irma Patterson Leake of the residence; three daughters, Deborah Ferst and husband, Edward of Guilford, CT, Cheri Pain and husband, Kevin of Nags Head, NC, and Mary Wright and husband, Jackson of Boulder, CO; five grandchildren, John and Katie Refano, Jillian Pain and Jenny and Savanna Wright. A memorial service will be held at Duck United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 31, 2003 at 2:00 pm with Rev. David Clift officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts in memory of H.
