Obituary for Olive Jean Owens Waldorf Olive Jean Owens Waldorf ,75, died October 7, 2003 at her home in Rydal, GA after a 2-year fight with Sarcoma Cancer. She was born 13 December 1927 in Hertford, Perquimans County, NC. to Apollos Cecil Owens and Nellie Catherine McKinney. She was married in Elizabeth City, NC 6 December 1945 to L. Douglas Waldorf, son of Leslie D. Waldorf and Mary Price Booker. She is survived by her husband, L. Douglas Waldorf, of the home; her mother, Nellie McKinney Owens of Elizabeth City, her sister, Maxie Owens Pursell of Elizabeth City; three sons, Ivan Roderick Waldorf of Raleigh, NC, Richard Owen Waldorf of Austin, TX and Peter Douglas Waldorf of Marietta, GA; three daughters, Jean Waldorf Black of Los Angeles, CA, Debra E. Norris of Murfreesboro, TN and Mary Kathryn Waldorf of Huntsville, AL; 26 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild and 4 great-grandchildren on the way. She attended Elizabeth City Primary School, S.L. Sheep Elementary School, and Elizabeth City High School, graduating in 1945. She was in the Toytown Band in the second grade at age 7, and in the first girlscout troop organized by Kathleen Chesson, in the mid-1930s and played flute in the Elizabeth City High School Band. After her marriage in December 1945, she lived a short time in Baltimore, MD while her husband completed his service in the US Coast Guard. They then moved back to Elizabeth City for a short time before moving on to Norfolk, VA in 1948. She lived in Norfolk and Virginia Beach until 1971, when the family moved to Manteo, NC. While there, she served as President of Manteo Women’s Club. She left Manteo in 1979 and traveled with her husband for several years before settling in Georgia in 1983 when she was called to serve beside her husband, a High Priest, in the Atlanta Georgia Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They served together in that holy calling for more than 18 years. She was active throughout her life in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many capacities in the church, including Primary, the children’s auxiliary, the Relief Society, the women’s auxiliary, and in church music. In addition to flute and piccolo, she played piano and violin. She was an accomplished portrait painter, having produced numerous commissioned works. She was actively teaching piano, refreshing her violin skills and painting portraits of family and friends when she was diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2001. The family will receive guests at the Waldorf Family Home at 708 Raleigh Street from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. on Friday 10 October 2003. Funeral services will be conducted under the direction of Bishop David Pritchard at 10 a.m. Saturday, 11 October 2003 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Ehringhaus Street in Elizabeth City, NC. Burial will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park
