Obituary of Russell Hull

Russell Maughan Hull Native of Whitney, Idaho Russell Maughan Hull, of 1934 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Friday, November 7th in the Albemarle Hospital. Hull was born April 29, 1924 in Whitney, Idaho to Alvin C. and Ella Hull. Although he spent much of his life in North Carolina and loved the history of the South, he never forgot his pioneer heritage. Hull proudly served his country in the U. S. Navy in World War II. He fought in the South Pacific aboard P.T. boats, the U.S.S. Oyster Bay and the U.S.S. Phoenix. Following the war, he married Camilla McPherson in 1948, and returned to graduate from Brigham-Young University with a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration. He was awarded a fellowship in agronomy to the University of Maryland, but chose to come to North Carolina to work in the McPherson family enterprises. Hull’s varied professional accomplishments included President and General Manager, McPherson Beverages, Littleton, North Carolina; farmer, Old Mill Farms, South Mill, North Carolina; and President, Carolina Feed & Seed, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Having grown up on a farm, Hull strove to make Old Mill Farms an example of how modern farming and conservation could co-exist, for which he was awarded conservation and wildlife awards. Career honors included: President, North Carolina Pepsi Bottlers Association; President, North Carolina Bottlers Association; Director, Wachovia Bank; and Director, Carolina Canners. A lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, Hull served as Scout Master of Troop 175 for 19 years. Twelve of his Boy Scouts earned Eagle Scouts, one of whom was the first recipient of the ‘God and Country’ award. Hull believed in the Boy Scouts’ dedication to the ideals of value-based leadership education and character training. He was a member of many civic associations, including the Jaycees and Rotary Club. Hull had a sincere interest in education, serving on the Elizabeth City School Board, the Chowan College Board of Trustees, and the board of the Elizabeth City State University Foundation. Hull was appointed by the Governor to the Coastal Plains Commission. He also was active in his church, representing Elizabeth City’s Second Ward of the Church of Latter-Day Saints on the Stake High Council. Hull, an avid sportsman, was a lifelong member of numerous conservation groups including Ducks Unlimited and Quail Unlimited. He loved nothing more than an early morning hunting at the farm with his sons and grandsons. His sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He leaves behind his wife, Camilla; his three children, Maughan Hull of Elizabeth City, NC, Dee Hull Everist of Mission Hills, KS, and Mitch Hull of Locust Valley, NY; and ten grand- children, Whitney, Russ and Chad Hull, Hillary, Mac, and Julia Everist, and Jay, William, Teddy, and Gabriela Hull. He is survived by his brother, Harold Maughan Hull; and sister, Ella Hull Farnsworth. He is preceded by his parents; brothers, Alvin C. Hull, Keith Maughan Hull, Dean Maughan Hull, Robert McCellan Hull; and sister Lorna Hull McPherson. He also leaves behind his friends in Old Timers and Mother’s Brothers. A memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Ehringhaus Street, Tuesday, November 11th at 2:00 PM.
