Obituary of Virginia Logan
DUCK, NC
VIRGINIA SHAW LOGAN, 91, of Manteo, NC died Thursday, January 8, 2004 in a Nags Head nursing home. Mrs. Logan, born in Flint, MI, was a retired Librarian and a member of St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church. She was the daughter of the late Gainey C. M. and Bertha Thomas Shaw and was the widow of the late Leonard Gilmore Logan, Sr.
Mrs. Logan attended Michigan State University from 1930-1932, where she met her future husband, Leonard ‘Limpy’ Logan, the football tem quarterback and student body president. Virginia was vice-president of the Sophomore class and joined Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She was a member of Eastern Star and, with her sister, opened The Broadway Coffee Shop in Flint Michigan after she was compelled to leave Michigan State during the depression. She attended Baker Business School and became secretary to the president of Fisher Body Corporation where she was elected president of the Industrial Girls Association and organized the Fisher Girl’s Riding Club. Virginia organized the St. Paul’s Evening Auxiliary, being selected the first president. She organized and was the first editor of Meyer’s School PTA News, a publication that exists to this date. She was a long-time Sunday school teacher in the Episcopal Church. Virginia was a Republican Committee Woman and was elected Majority Inspector in Pennsylvania. One of her goals of life was realized when she returned to college and graduated from Beaver College in Glenside, PA in 1968. She worked for Franklin Book Company, the Cheltenham School Board and High School Library advancing to the High School Library Para-Professional. She retired in 1977. Following the death of her husband, Leonard Logan, Sr. in 1981 she moved to Manteo where she resided until moving to Britthaven Nursing home last year after a fall. Virginia was an avid reader, crossword puzzle expert and bridge player. Her son, Leonard G. Logan, Jr. was a Manteo Attorney and now resides in Duck, NC, where he is proprietor of Elizabeth’s Caf & Winery.
Mrs. Logan is survived by a son, Leonard G. Logan, Jr. of Duck, NC; five grandchildren, Sylvia Katherine Kathyé"" Skomsky of FL, Richard C. ‘Ricky’ Brake of Kitty Hawk, NC, Leonard G. ‘Gil’ Logan, III of KY, Letitia ‘Tish’ L. McCauley of FL, and Eric Raymond Logan of NC; seven great-grandchildren, Nathan Brake, Hunter Brake, Daniel Brake, Taylor Leigh Logan, Garrett Reed Logan, Jackson Paul Logan and Macy Sage McCauley.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at 11:00 am, with the Rev. Charles E. B. Gill officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 434 Fayetteville St. Mall, Two Hanover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, NC 27601, or to the Memorial Honor Program, POB 2680, N.Canton, OH 44720. All proceeds will benefit the state of NC.
