Obituary of Hattie Ballance

Hattie P. Ballance Gates County native Mrs. Hattie Louise Piland Ballance, age 66, of 1179 Lynch’s Corner Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Monday, February 9, 2004, at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Balance, a native of Gates County, was the wife of Jimmie Selvester Ballance of the residence and the daughter of Margaret Duck Spivey and the step-daughter of Darvin W. Spivey of Whaleyville, VA, and the daughter of the late Wiley Lawrence Piland. She was a member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church and a retired manager from the South Mills Supermarket. Besides her husband and mother, she is survived by two daughters, Vanessa B. Johnson and Gloria Ballance, both of Elizabeth City, NC; a son, Lawrence Ballance of Elizabeth City, NC; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild. A graveside funeral service will be Friday, February 13, 2004, at 2:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jake Mullins officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Thursday evening and at other times at the residence.
