Obituary of W. Carson Browning
Southern Shores, NC
W. Carson Browning, Jr., age 84, of Ocean Blvd., Southern Shores, NC, and Wesley Chapel, FL, died Thursday, June 10, 2004 in the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. Browning was a native of Logan, WV, and was the son of the late Willard Carson Browning and Osa Bell Browning. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II serving in the Pacific Theater. He served as Post Master of the Logan, WV post office, and at one period he was the youngest postmaster of a first class office. In 1961 he moved to Washington, DC, as Director of Customer Relations, and retired as Director of Postmasters and Rural Appointments. He was the originator of the concept for the postal service zip code system. He was active in numerous community projects in Logan, WV, and served as disaster chairman of the local Red Cross. Mr. Browning was a member of the Duck United Methodist Church, a charter member of the North Banks Rotary Club, and was a Paul Harris Fellow and a charter member of the Duck Woods Country Club. During his service with the U.S. Post Office Department he dedicated the old post office in Kitty Hawk, NC.
Survivors include his wife, Lou Anne Morris Browning; four daughters, Catherine Browning Noone of Southern Shores, NC, Kristin Browning Clark of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Lynn Browning Kline and husband Larry of Bethesda, MD, Paige Browning Saglio and husband Dane of Boyds, MD; one son, W. Carson Browning, III of the home; one sister Wilma Browning Price of Sun City Center, FL; nine grandchildren, Erin Noone Walker, Colin Noone and wife Samatha, Meredith Clark, Kyle Clark, Margaret Ann Kline, and twins Carson and Larry Kline, Eric Saglio and Allison Saglio; and two great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Noone and Jayne Walker.
A memorial service will be held Monday, June 21, 2004 at 11:00 AM at the Duck United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Clift officiating. The family will gather at the Duck Woods Country Club following the memorial service. The family suggests that memorial contribution be directed to the Duck United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the Church Food Pantry Fund, PO Box 8010, Duck, NC 27949.
