Obituary of Mary James

Mrs. Mary Jane Spruill James, age 85, of 1700 West Ehringhaus Street, died Friday, August 6, 2004, at Winslow Nursing Home. Mrs. James, a native of Bertie County, was the daughter of the late Edward C. Spruill and Bettie Sue Sewell Spruill, and the widow of Alvin J. James. Mrs. James was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. A retired school teacher, she taught at Sheep-Harney and Central Elementary Schools, and retired after thirty eight years of teaching. After retirement she devoted much time to her garden club work and the beautification of Elizabeth City, NC. She was selected for Who’s Who of American Women Personalities of the South. She was a member of the Flower Lovers’ Garden Club and served as president for twenty years. She was active as a lifetime member of the Garden Club of North Carolina and served on the Board of Governors of Elizabethan Gardens for Sixteen years. She is survived by a cousin, Jane Revelle, and her husband Dillon, of Suffolk, VA. A funeral service will be Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC with the Rev. David O. Leary officiating. A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday at 3:00 P.M. at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC. The family will receive friends immediately after the funeral service in the lobby of the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the charity one’s choice.
