Obituary of Anne Embrey

Nags Head Anne Adair Embrey, 64, died suddenly at home Friday afternoon in her sleep. Mrs. Embrey, born in Cleveland, Oh, retired in 1996 as a kindergarten teacher in Churchill Rd. School in McLean, VA and moved to the Outer Banks. She was the daughter of the late William Hassink, Jr. and the late Eleanor Bissett Hassink and the wife of George A. Embrey, a newspaperman retired from The Columbus Dispatch and Dare County Republican chairman. Mrs. Embrey was active in St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She attended weekly Bible study and helped with reading books to St. Andrew’s Day School children. An avid bowler, Mrs. Embrey helped represent Dare county at this year’s Senior Games in Raleigh. A graduate of Oakwood, Ohio, High School, Marymount College in Arlington, VA, Mrs. Embrey also attended Miami University of Ohio and the Ohio State University. Besides her husband of 43 years, Mrs. Embrey is survived by her sons, Ralph A. Embrey and his wife Alicia of Raleigh, Scott A. Embrey and his wife Pamela of Richmond, VA and Robert W. Embrey of Ashburn, VA; daughter, Anne E. Embrey of Greensboro, NC; grandsons, Andrew Wray Stoehr of Savannah, GA; Ethan G. Embrey of Raleigh, and William Robert of Greensboro; granddaughters, Peyton Elizabeth and Devin Grace of Richmond, and Catherine Adair of Raleigh. Other survivors include sisters, Barbara Croshier of Vista, CA, Georgia Otten and her husband, Mac Otten; a brother, William Hassink III and his wife, Dee, of Dayton, OH; aunts, Catherine Jones of Rehoboth Beach, DE; her daughter, Eleanor Louise Stoehr, preceded her in death. An Episcopal Memorial Service with the Rev. Charles E. B. Gill officiating will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 27 at St. Andrew’s By-the-Sea followed by a reception, in St. Andrew’s Hall.
