Obituary of Doris Dixon

Doris H. Dixon, age 79, of 104 Hunter’s Trail W., Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Virginia. She was preceded in death in September of 2003 by her husband of 57 years, Melvin T. Dixon, and earlier by her mother and stepfather, Elsie and Buster Brickhouse, also of Elizabeth City. Mrs. Dixon is survived by her daughter, Diana D. Hardison and her son-in-law, Edwin T. Hardison of Abingdon, Virginia; by one sister, Christine Elsen of Steele, Alabama; by two brothers, Curtis Brickhouse and Lyman Brickhouse, both of Elizabeth City; by the siblings’ spouses Lud Elsen, Donna Brickhouse, and Darlene Brickhouse; by a number of cousins, a niece and two nephews; by extended family and friends; and by her beloved pet Sheltie, Dee Dee. Born August 22, l925 in Fort Landing, North Carolina, Mrs. Dixon moved to Elizabeth City as an adolescent and became a lifelong resident. She married Melvin T. Dixon after his return from service in the Army in the European theatre, on April 29, l946. Mrs. Dixon held a variety of positions before World War II including telephone operator. Completing training at Hicks Academy in Norfolk, she became a professional hairdresser after the war and continued for more than 25 years, half of that time as proprietor of her own shop. She enjoyed a devoted and loyal clientele, retaining personal friendships with her customers long after her retirement. Until declining health intervened, Doris was a faithful member of City Road United Methodist Church in Elizabeth City. She enjoyed sewing and flower gardening. During the last months of her life, she was in Knoxville, Tennessee, and Abingdon, Virginia, in the care of her daughter Diana and son-in-law, Edwin. A graveside service will be conducted on Tuesday, October 12, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in Old Hollywood Cemetery with Rev. Charles McKenzie officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC beginning at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday until 10:45am.
