Obituary of Frederick G. Hale

HALE Hatteras, NC Fred G. Hale, 68, died at home in Hatteras, NC on November 14, 2004. His family and constant companion, Amos were by his side. Fred Hale was a long-time resident of Hatteras and was known locally as a building contractor and author who enjoyed writing the Cape Hatteras mysteries. Fred Hale was born on January 15, 1936 in Gulfport, Mississippi. He graduated from Grants Pass High School, Grants Pass, Oregon in 1952 and the United States Naval Academy in 1960. His early Naval assignments included duty onboard USS Newport News,(CA-148) and following submarine school, duty onboard USS Torsk (SS-423), USS Darter (SS-576) and USS Trigger (SS-564). He served a one year tour in Viet Nam with the Naval Advisory Group. Later assignments included instructor and director of the counterinsurgency branch. Special Training Division, Naval Amphibious School; the Marine Corps Command and Staff College; duty with Commander Service Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as comptroller for planning, policy and budgeting for the amphibious forces. Fred retired from the Navy in 1978 with the rank of commander. Fred was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with star, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal with two stars, Republic of Viet Nam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation of the Gallantry Cross with Palm, Viet Nam Campaign Medal with device, National Defense Service Medal with star and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his retirement from the Navy, Fred formed a consulting firm, Quatrain Corporation. This company developed a coal off-loading capability for the port of Portsmouth, VA. Later, he formed Hale and Associates, Inc., which was active in oil and natural gas ventures in Kansas. Dash Partners, a consulting firm, Fred owned with his wife, provided business formulation expertise and Fred was actively managing a company that imports and markets back packs when he died. Fred served as the Administration Officer for the Reagan Bush Campaign of 1984 and subsequently served as the Chief Financial Officer for the Republican National Convention held in Dallas, Texas in August 1984 and held a similar position for the 1985 Presidential Inaugural Committee. Fred was preceded in death by his father, Paul C. Hale, of Gulfport, Mississippi, and mother, Glenda E. Cook of Grants Pass, Oregon. Fred leaves his wife Jo Anne Hale of Hatteras, NC, a son Frederick G. Hale, Jr. of Chesapeake, VA, two daughters, Cynthia Hale Coffelt of Reston, VA and Elizabeth Hale of Falls Church, VA; three grandchildren, Merriweather, Jackson, and Dalton; two brothers, Roy Hale of La Plata, MD and Richard Cook of Manchester, Washington. A funeral service will be held at Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, on Tuesday, November 16, 2004 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM, one hour before the service. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors on Thursday, January 6, 2005 at 11:00 AM. Memorial Donations may be sent to the Hatteras Island Cancer Foundation, P.O.
