Obituary of David Dallas
David W. Dallas, Jr.
Pearl Harbor survivor, David W. Dallas, Jr., 83 of Hertford, NC, went to his eternal home in heaven on September 25, 2004. He was born to David W. Dallas, Sr. and Frances Engelmann of Philadelphia, PA on February 5, 1921. He was preceded in death by his sister Marjorie Ruth Doherty.
He leaves behind his wife Iris Myatt Dallas of Holiday Island, NC, four sons, David W. Dallas, III and his wife Leilani of Holiday Island, NC, Michael B. Dallas and friend Mary of Key West, FL, J. Scott Dallas and his wife Edith of Jarrettsville, MD, Christopher A. Dallas and his wife Mary of Holiday Island, NC. He also leaves behind one sister Carolyn Jean Handschuh of Ardsley, PA, twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
He joined the Army in 1939 and was stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii where he survived the Pearl Harbor attack. He was sent to Officers Candidate School in Fort Sill, OK, where he received his commission as an officer. He then went to Parachute School in Fort Benning, GA, and transferred to Camp MacKall, NC, from there he was sent to occupy Japan. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering at Tri State College in Angolo, IN, in 1948. He was recalled as an instructor to serve in the Korean War and was honorably discharged as First Lieutenant from the army. He was a well known and recognized engineer in Baltimore Co, MD, where he had his own office for twenty years. After retirement he and Iris went to Mexico to catch marlin, but found that they had been ‘caught’ instead by the Mexican people. Each year for twenty one years they spent four months doing mission work in Mexico. It was his hearts desire to return to Mexico in 2005, but God called him home instead. He was a dedicated member at Chapel on the Sound where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, and choir member, always willing and available to do God’s work.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at Chapel on the Sound at Holiday Island Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM on November 28, 2004 with the Rev. Tom Oliver officiating. The Chapel’s number is 426-1160.
