Obituary of William Earl Meiggs

WILLIAM EARL MEIGGS, SR. Retired Logger William Earl Meiggs, Sr., 89, of 1073 N. 343, Camden, NC died at his residence Thursday, December 09, 2004. He was born in Camden County, NC to the late Winfred Benjamin and Bertha Estelle Sawyer Meiggs and was the widower of the late Sara Elizabeth Wilson Meiggs. Mr. Meiggs valued contributions to the community throughout his lifetime by serving as a member of the following boards; Albemarle E.M.C., Camden-Currituck Farm Bureau, and Elizabeth City Foundation’s Scholarship Committee. He was a member for over 64 years and twice past master of Widow’s Son Lodge #75 A.F. & A. M. and the South Mills Ruritan Club, where he served in different leadership positions. Although, Mr. Meiggs served on numerous boards and committees, his true dedication was to his church, Geneva Baptist Church. As a member of Geneva Baptist Church, Mr. Meiggs served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director and Sunday School Superintendent. The family wishes to thank Geneva Lamb, LeVern Gregory, Cowanis Akai and Lillian Davis for the outstanding care they provided to Daddy over the last six years. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia M. Duncan of Louisville, KY and Lynne M. Bunch and husband, Rodney, of Camden, NC; two sons, William E. Meiggs, Jr. and wife, Phyllis, and Garry Meiggs and wife Sharon all of Camden, NC. Also, Mr. Meiggs is survived by three sisters, Bertha Gregory of Camden, NC, Kathryn Aydlett of Elizabeth City, NC and Mildred Jones of New Bern, NC; three brothers, Lem S. Meiggs of Elizabeth City, NC, Ike Meiggs of Virginia Beach, VA and Raymond Meiggs of Hertford, NC; nine grandchildren, Craig Duncan and wife Sally, Derrel Duncan and wife Debbie, Sherrie Goebel and husband Tom, Jason Noblitt, Adam Meiggs, William E. Meiggs III, Stacy Meiggs, Timothy Bunch and Rachel Meiggs; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Meiggs was preceded in death by three brothers, Oscar Meiggs, Winfred Meiggs and Ray S. Meiggs and two grandsons, D. Keith Duncan, Jr. and Garry Wilson Meiggs, Jr. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, December 12, 2004, at 2:00 pm, in the Geneva Baptist Church by Rev. Mitchell Harrison. Burial with Masonic rites will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will be at their residence, 1073 North #343, Camden, NC.
