Obituary of Harold Wooton
HAROLD LEROY WOOTON, age 74, of 2714 West Main Street, went to be with his Lord and Savior, and grandson Joshua Wilson, on Saturday, December 13, 2003. A native of West Manchester, Ohio he called Elizabeth City his home for over 36 years. Mr. Wooton was an active member of the City Road United Methodist Church, a founding member of the City Road Men’s Fellowship, a Boy Scout Leader, a life member of the American Legion of Ohio, and a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge # 317 AF & AM. He was a hunting and sports enthusiast who excelled in bowling, golfing, hunting, fishing, and the Senior Center Games.
Mr. Wooton retired from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer on August 7, 1967 after 20 years of exceptional service. He started his career as a diver and later honed his artistic talents as a military pattern maker. He also retired from the Elizabeth City Coast Guard Station after a 17-year career as a carpenter in Civil Service.
Besides his wife of 49 years, Leatha Lewis Wooton, he is survived by two daughters, Barbara Wooton Wilson of Elizabeth City, NC, and Linda Wooton Cramer of Chesapeake, VA, and three sons: Larry Lewis Wooton of Midlothian, VA; Jamie Harold Wooton of Camden NC; and Marcus Ray Wooton of Hillsborough, NC. Eleven grandchildren lovingly called him ‘Papaw.’ His mother Marietta Wooton Shepard, and two sisters Betty Wooton Spiegel of Louisville KY, and Dorothy Shepard Korn of Anderson, IN survive him. His father, Lewis J. Wooton, predeceased him in 1956.
Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday December 16 , 2003 at 1:00 p.m. in the City Road United Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles McKenzie will officiate. Burial will follow in Westlawn Cemetery with full Military Honors. The family will receive friends at City Road United Methodist Church, North Road Street on Monday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Twiford’s Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
