Obituary of Pauline Winslow
Pauline Bateman Winslow, 82, of the 1000 block of Northside Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Friday, December 26, 2003, in the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Winslow was born in the community of Burgess in Perquimans County. In her early years, she attended Burgess school and was taught there by her aunt, Pauline Spruill, for whom she was named. She later graduated from Central High School, where she played on the championship girl’s basketball team. Mrs. Winslow was preceded in death by her parents, George R. Bateman and Minnie Matthews Bateman, brothers, Wade M. Bateman and Grant R. Bateman. She was a member of the West Road Church of Christ, Chesapeake, VA.
She is survived by her husband, J. Aubrey Winslow, who loved, indeed adored her for more than sixty years; twenty five of those years in various locations during his 30 years in the US Coast Guard. A sister, Pattie B. Townsend of Salisbury, MD. and her two daughters, Nancy Brittingham, her son, Mike Davis and wife, Kim and their two young children, Morgan and Molly, also Susan N. Townsend of Owings Mills, MD. A nephew, David Bateman of Chesapeake, VA and his four daughters, Rebecca B. Raper and husband, Jody, and their two quite young daughters, Dakota and Willow, and daughters, Stephanie, Michelle and Elizabeth Bateman all of Chesapeake, VA.
Mrs. Winslow began her walk with the Lord at the Bethlehem Church of Christ, Hertford, NC. As she moved from place to place with her husband, she taught children of various ages in Bible Schools. Having sung with Roanoke Bible College’s Choral Club in the early days of its history, Mrs. Winslow put what she learned in that experience to work as she served the Lord’s church. She led the song services and taught classes in vacation bible schools and with her husband was youth sponsors for teens. She formed and directed youth choirs in widely separated places such as St. Louis, MO., Troy, IN., Elizabeth City, NC and Chesapeake, VA. She was known and loved by many and was called affectionately ‘Miss Polly’.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, December 29, 2003, at 11:00am in the Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, Church St., by Rev. David Bateman and Mathew Knight. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives in the lobby of the funeral home immediately following the funeral service and at other times at their residence, 1001 Northside Rd., Elizabeth City.
