Obituary of Charlotte Denscombe

Charlotte B. Denscombe Elizabeth City resident Charlotte B. Denscombe, age 84, of Elizabeth City, N.C. died at Guardian Care on Monday, January 17, 2005. Charlotte was born in Detroit, Michigan the daughter of the late Eugene Charles and Charlotte Isabelle Benington. She grew up in Buffalo and Rye, New York before moving to Winter Park, Florida in 1957. Charlotte graduated from Rollins College and worked as an accountant in Orlando, Florida before retiring and moving to Elizabeth City in 1974. For many years Charlotte was an active volunteer and helped several local organizations including: College of The Albemarle’s ABLE Adult Reading Program; delivering Meals-On-Wheels; assisting the Red Cross Bloodmobile; helping with the arts and crafts program at Guardian Care and as an advisor with the Albemarle Area Council on Aging. Charlotte was especially dedicated to the Elizabeth City Parks and Recreation Department Senior Center. She regularly attended the Center on an almost daily basis for several years and leaves behind many dear and loving friends. The family continues to be very grateful to Sue Norton, Kay Boyce, the staff and members for their love, care and dedication. Her days were made bright by all the activities that make ‘the Center’ a daytime home for many of the area’s senior citizens. Charlotte was also very active in the North Carolina Senior Olympics and proudly displayed several gold, silver and bronze medals she had won in various competitions including swimming, croquet, shuffleboard and her favorite pastime, billiards. Survivors include Charlotte’s son John Denscombe, his wife Ann, and their son Jason. She was preceded in death by a grandson John Christopher ‘Chris’ Denscombe. Charlotte’s family also includes Ann’s brothers Jerry Drew, his wife Cindy, and their children Mandy, Jacy and Jerry; another brother Michael Drew, his wife Donna, and their children Samuel, Joshua, and Rebecca; and a sister Michelle Goodwin, her husband Wilford, and their children Wesley and Brandy. The family sincerely appreciates the care given to her by Dr. Witwer, Winslow Memorial Home, South Haven Manor and especially the wonderful staff at Guardian Care. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January, 22nd at 1:00 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church St., Elizabeth City. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7:00 until 8:00 p. m. At other times, they will be at the residence of John, Ann and Jason Denscombe at 215 Rosecroft Drive, Elizabeth City. Following the service the family will also meet friends at the funeral home immediately following the service. Twiford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
