Joseph Edward Hill, 95, an accomplished and skilled gunsmith, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, Feb 8, 2005 after a brief illness. He was born in Perquimans County and resided in Elizabeth City until the last 3 1/2 years of his life, when he lived in Suffolk, VA. He was the widower of Hazel Perry Hill, his wife of 60 years.
He was affectionally known as ‘Paw’ to his Grandchildren.
He retired from McPherson Brothers Auto Supply in 1971after 35 years, and operated his own business known as Joe’s Gun Shop until 2001.
He was a faithful long-time member of First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees for several terms. He served on many committees and Sec. of the Men’s Bible Class for 40 years. Mr. Hill was Past Master of Eureka Lodge 317, member of Sudan Shriners, Elizabeth City York Rite Bodies and past commander of The American Legion Post 84. He was a member of NC Wildlife Resources Commission. He served two terms on the Elizabeth City Planning Commission. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Elizabeth City National Guard for many years.
He is survived by a loving daughter and son-in-law Jo Ann H and Roy William Evans of Suffolk, VA, one grandson, William Joseph Clark Evans and wife Ellen , great-grandchildren, William (Will) Joseph Clark Evans II and Lauren Elizabeth Evans all of Richmond, VA, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street, with the Rev. T. R. Miller officiating. The family will greet friends after the service. Burial will be private.
