Mr. Harley Matkens Berry, age 89, of 1630 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, February 9, 2005, at his residence. Mr. Berry, a native of Pasquotank County, NC, was the son of the late John Berry and Lillie Parsons Berry and the widower of Marjorie James Berry. He was a farmer, and a member of Salem Baptist Church. An avid hunter, he was a lifetime member of the Albemarle Houndsmen Association and the Weeksville Hunting Club.
Mr. Berry is survived by two daughters, Mattie B. and John Carter and Faye B. and Mack Sawyer, all of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Elizabeth Berry Eves of Elizabeth City, NC; two granddaughters, Jayne C. and Tom Davis of Wake Forest, NC, and Pam C. and Brian Yurkovic of Winston-Salem, NC; two grandsons, Chad and Mandy R. Sawyer of Nashville, TN, and Brantley Berry and Marsha T. Sawyer of Raleigh, NC; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Leigh B. Madre.
A graveside funeral service will be Friday, February 11, 2005, at 4:00 PM at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jeffrey Russell officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Mack & Faye Sawyer, 12 Bateman Drive, Elizabeth City, NC. The family suggests memorial donations to either Salem Baptist Church, 1401 Salem Church Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 or Albemarle Hospice, PO Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
