Mary Louvenia Hopkins, age 84, died February 14, 2005. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, the daughter of the late Becton and Kate Sanders Hopkins. She spent four year as a reporter for The Daily Advance, under the tutelage of Herbert Peele, after a summer writing for W.O. Saunders’ Independent. After leaving Elizabeth City she spent 38 years with the Ledger Star/Virginia Pilot in Norfolk, VA. Her accomplishments there were noted in Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Foremost Women in Communications, and Bibliography of British and American Writers. She also received awards from the Virginia Press Association for writing and page-one layout. For 13 years she was entertainment editor/writer for the television tabloid, the ‘Green Sheet’, during which time she interviewed more than 400 celebrities in Hollywood, New York and other press junkets around the country. Before that assignment she was police reporter, courts reporter and general assignments reporter. She also served two terms by judicial appointments as jury commissioner for the city of Norfolk. She retired as assistant city editor in 1980 and returned to Elizabeth City.
She leaves her good friends by whom she will be greatly missed.
