Obituary of Helen Pool

Helen Barco Pool Chesapeake ‘ Helen Elizabeth Barco Pool, 94, died peacefully on March 6, 2005, at Sentara Nursing Home in Barco, NC, where she resided for over eight years. Helen was born on November 26, 1910, in Grandy, NC. She lived in South Norfolk for over 30 years. She was the daughter of the late William Clyde Barco and Laura Evans Barco and was the widow of Charlie Gaskins Pool. They were married for over 55 years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde Wendell Barco, Sr. and Ralph Evans Barco and three sisters, Izez Barco Grandy, Mary Barco Etheridge and Bertha Barco Gregory. She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Laura Pool Ostrander of Va. Beach and a son, Charles Proctor Pool and wife Karen, two grandchildren, Jessica Elizabeth Pool and Kevin Gaskins Pool of Carova Beach, NC, ten nieces and nephews, seventeen great-nieces and nephews, nine great-great nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Pool Harrell of Jacksonville Beach, FL and Norma Saunders Barco of Grandy, NC. Helen was a registered nurse, graduating in the Class of 1933 from Norfolk Protestant Hospital. She was employed as a private duty nurse before receiving public health certification from the College of William and Mary in 1936. She worked for Kings Daughters Visiting Nurse Service and South Norfolk and Chesapeake Health Departments. She retired in 1982 with over 35 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Grandy, NC. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 pm on Monday, March 14, 2005 at Twiford’s Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge with the Rev.
