Obituary of John Baker

John R. Baker Chesapeake ‘ John R. Baker Sr.Passed away March 31, 2005 at the age of 80. He was known to all as ‘Mr. B’. A native of Staten Island, New York, and long time resident of Chesapeake, Virginia, he was the son of the late Arthur and Ila Baker. He was a World War II Army Veteran, Past Vice Commander of VFW Post 3829, Life Member of VFW Post 4809. Upon retirement in 1987 from the construction business, he began working as the morning attendant for 17 years at Cossroads BP, in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was an avid bowler with his close and dear friend of 40 years, Ed McHorney of Maple, NC. John was predeceased by his wife Ethel ‘Helen’ Parker Baker, two sons, John Richard Baker, Jr. and Carl Wayne Baker, and sister Evangeline ‘Linkie’ Murphy. He is survived by one daughter Cornelia McKenzie of Rockingham, NC, three sons Joseph C. Baker and Charles G. Baker, both of Chesapeake, Va. and A. Clayton Baker of Currituck, NC one special niece and nephew, Lynn Neese of Abingdon VA Arthur ‘Spooks’ Ledbetter of Quinton. VA; seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and another expected soon, along with a host of other relatives and friends.. Funeral services will be held at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake on Sunday at 2:00 pm with Rev. Harold Bergey officiating. Burial will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 7:00 until 8:30 pm. The family also wishes to extend an invitation for loved ones and friends to join them next to ‘MR. B’s Corner’ at 1508 Waterway Circle in Chesapeake following the Sunday service. The family of John would also like to thank Marilyn J. Keffer and H. Lynn Keffer, daughters-in-law, Jody, Shelly and Cheryl Baker and all of John’s friends for their love and support to our Father.
