Obituary of Burwell Evans
EVANS
MANTEO, NC
BURWELL A. EVANS completed his life on May 9, 2005. It was a life complete in every sense. Blessed with remarkable energy, he was supported by the loving help on Ina, his wife of 57 years, happily surrounded by his children who settled nearby, and rewarded by the success of family business he took pride in building into a thriving enterprise with his family members.
Burwell Atkinson Evans is survived by his wife, Ina Meekins Evans, three children, Martha Evans Pitts and husband Bill, Dawn Evans Enochs and husband Dave, Ray Evans and wife Pam, and six grandchildren, Angela Pitts, Adrian Pitts, Amelia Pitts, Kyle Enochs, Ryan Evans and Darren Evans. He is also survived by Eva Wright, his sister of St. Mary’s Georgia, and Harry Evans, his brother along with wife Sara, and a sister-in-law Mary Meekins Beauchamp along with husband Richard of Norfolk, Va.
He loved his family and especially enjoyed his six grandchildren growing up nearby. He also loved the hardware business, his workshop, his hunting camp, Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church and the Atlanta Braves, win or lose.
Burwell was born on November 9, 1922 in Camden County, Georgia. He was the son of William Evans and Martha Quarterman Evans. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He married in 1947 and he and his wife graduated from Louisburg College together. He attended N.C. State until the opportunity to purchase a small hardware store in Manteo arose in 1950. He liked to claim he found the hardware store more to his liking than studying the second law of thermodynamics. He was right. His little hardware store grew into six Ace Hardware Stores in Dare, Currituck and Pasquotank Counties with the shared hard work of his partners, Ray Evans, Bill Pitts and Dave Enochs whom he valued so much. Burwell continued to work in the business almost daily until his death. He particularly treasured the celebration given by his family and his employees on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
He became a lifelong stalwart member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, serving as and usher and a member of the administrative board. He served for many years as a volunteer fireman for the community and he remained a quiet, simple friend to many in his community. He was a man honored for his integrity, a man whose word you could bank on. He built his life on a solid foundation and he built it true.
Funeral services for Burwell Atkinson Evans will be held at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 12, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive visitors at Twiford Funeral Home on Wednesday from 7:00 ‘8:30 p.m. The family requests that contributions in his memory be made to Mt.
