Obituary of James Edward Sawyer

JAMES EDWARD SAWYER, 88, of Avon, died, Tuesday, May 10, 2005, in Nags Head, N.C. Mr. Sawyer was born in Beaufort, N.C. and was retired from the U.S. Coast Guard. Mr. Sawyer served for eight years in the U.S. Army and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor and earned an Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge.
He was the son of the late James Lee and Lula Forbes Sawyer and the husband of Elsie Scarborough Sawyer.
Besides his wife surviving are his son: Robert James Sawyer of Avon; his sister: Emeritta Duncan of Elizabeth City and his brother: Steve Sawyer of Taylors Beach.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, May 13, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. in Saint John’s United Methodist Church by the Rev. Susie Fitch-Slater. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Friends may join the family at Saint John’s United Methodist Church Thursday evening for visitation. Twiford’s Island Chapel Hatteras is assisting the family.
