Obituary of Alice Sykes

Kitty Hawk, NC Alice Powell Sykes, died peacefully among her family and beloved caregivers at her residence on May 20, 2005. Born on July 20, 1907 in Gates County, NC, she was predeceased by her father Charlie Mann Jackson and her mother Elizabeth Cobb Jackson. Along with her 12 brothers and sisters. She was also predeceased by her son George Elliott Powell, Jr. She is survived by her three granddaughters; Margo Blakely and her husband Cliff of Kill Devil Hills, Georgette McGovern and her husband Scott Wiggins of Virginia Beach, VA and Travis Powell and her husband Bill Morris of Richmond, VA; five great-grandchildren, Josh and Aaron Blakely, Allison, Brian and Maggie McGovern and a daughter-in-law Rachel N. Powell of Kill Devil Hills; also several nieces and nephews and a special nephew, Al Braxton from Atlanta, GA. Alice was a pioneer in the tourism and hospitality business in Dare County. She built the original Sea Ranch in 1952 in Southern Shores. Taken by the Ash Wednesday Storm, Alice built the new Sea Ranch in Kill Devil Hills in 1962 where it stands today. A private graveside service will be held at the Jackson Family farm in Gates County, NC on Friday, May 27, 2005 at 2:00 PM. A memorial celebration of Alice’s life will be held at the Sea Ranch hotel on July 20, 2005. Donations may be made to Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909. Twiford’s Funeral Home, Manteo, is assisting the family with these arrangements.
