Obituary of George M. Powell

MANTEO, NC GEORGE McCOY POWELL, 86, of Manteo, NC died Friday, June 3, 2005 in the Vintage Inn Retirement Home, Willaimston, NC. Mr. Powell, born in Gates County, NC, was an appliance repair and household serviceman and was a former part-owner of Manteo Furniture Company for 35 years. He was a member of Manteo Faith Baptist Church, was a 32nd degree Mason with the Manteo Masonic Lodge #521 and a member of Scottish Rite. Mr. Powell was the son of the late William Henry and Avie Lowe Powell. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Ginger P. Askew, a sister, Ollie P. Brown, three brothers, Roland Powell, Randolph ‘Pete’ Powell, and Lonnie Powell. Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Geneva Creef Powell; a daughter, Wanda P. Ambrose and husband, Edward of Manteo, NC; four grandchildren, Stacy Ambrose and Eric Ambrose, both of Manteo, NC, Russ Askew of Greenville, NC and Kevin Briggs of Edenton, NC; one great-grandchild, Megan Ambrose; two sisters, Ellen P. Carroll of Norfolk, VA and Nell P. Long of Gates County, NC; four brothers, Sam Powell of Portsmouth, VA, Frank Powell, Madison Powell and Mac Powell, all of Eure, NC. Funeral services will be held at Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo on Sunday, June 7, 2005 at 3:00 pm with Rev. Ronnie Midgett officiating. Burial will be in Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and at other times at the residence of Wanda and Edward Ambrose, 160 Creef’s Ridge Road, Manteo. Memorial donations may be made to Manteo Faith Baptist Church, POB 5, Manteo, NC 27954. Twiford’s Colony Chapel, Manteo is assisting the family with arrangements.
