Mildred White, Layden, age 82, of the 1100 block of Ocean Highway North, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, June 5, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was born in Hertford, NC, on March 15, 1923 to John O. White, Sr., and Maggie Howell White.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph Layden; a sister, Marion White Bowen of Orange Park, FL; sister-in-law, Mary L. Williams of Camden, NC; brothers-in-law, Edgar Berry of Elizabeth City, NC, Frank Williams of Camden, NC, and Ray Bowen of Orange Park, FL; nieces, Marsha Sanderlin of Camden, NC, Jacquelyn B. Aly of Decatur, GA, and Cindy Lowry of Weeksville, NC; nephews, Michael White of Hertford, NC, Edward Bowen of Lake Ozette, WA, John O. White, IV, of Hertford, NC; several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Mildred was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College, Greenville, NC, with an A.B. Degree in Elementary Education. She was an elementary teacher in the Elizabeth City School System for thirty-seven years at S. L. Sheep Harney School and J. C. Sawyer School. Her years spent in the profession brought her much happiness and joy with a deep dedication toward a better education for all her students. Her membership in the Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society for outstanding teachers brought her many new ideas as she worked closely with her students.
Mildred was a member of The First Baptist Church of Elizabeth City and spent much time working with the Christian needs of the community. She gave many voluntary hours to the Albermarle Hospital Auxiliary, loving every moment.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 9, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mason Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford, NC. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the funeral home.
