Mrs. Wanda Lee Marsh Smith, age 83, of 1005 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Wednesday, November 9, 2005, at Carolina House. She was the third of four daughters of Roy and Mona Marsh. She was born in the small community of Preston, MO. During WW II she served in the US Coast Guard where she met a naval chaplain who became her husband of 59 years. She worked as a secretary for several years, but devoted most of her life to the service of her family and church. She was a Sunday School Teacher for forty years, served as director of numerous Vacation Bible Schools, and was WMU President in several churches. She had a great sense of humor and warm relationships with all of the congregations that her husband served.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Gerald Theon Smith of Elizabeth City, NC; three daughters, Ruth A Smith of Waikola, Hawaii, Sandy Smith Carr of Elizabeth City, NC, and Marsha Smith of Lisbon, Portugal; and four grandchildren, Thomas Carr, Anna Carr, Annette Merle, and William Merle. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Carr.
Funeral services will be Sunday, November 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. T. R. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of the daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Robert & Sandy Carr, 1005 Rivershore Road, Elizabeth City, NC.
