Obituary of Caroline Gray

Avon, NC Caroline Rowland Gray, 91, died at her home in Avon, Sunday, November 13, 2005. Mama Carrie was a local artist with a loyal following. She was born in Patchogue, NY on January 11, 1914 to the late Howard Betts Rowland and Elizabeth Augusta Stockem Rowland. She married the late Ellis Andrew Gray, Sr. in 1931 and moved to Avon in 1934. She was a member of The Church of the Nazarene in Patchogue. Surviving are her five children; Elizabeth Gaskins and husband, Warren of Avon, Mary Gray and husband Hal of Hatteras, Ellis Gray, Jr. and wife Mary of Florida, John Gray and wife Grace of Avon, Cheryl McDonald and husband Allen of Virginia; nine grandchildren; Sheila Crowe and husband Ron, Warren Gaskins, Jr and wife Denise, Ranny Barnett and wife Beth, Timothy Barnett, Ellis Gray, III and wife Patty, Pamela Gray and husband Chuck, Anthony Gray and wife Diane, Dana Gray, Alicia Gray; 12 great-grandchildren; Carrie Dilworth and husband Don, Ryan Meekins and wife Tiffany, Warren Gaskins, III, Antoinette Mattingly and husband Brian, Amanda Tucker and husband Jeremy, Ashley and Krista Barnett, Jade, Samantha and Victoria Gray, Christopher and Adriana Gray; seven great-great grandchildren; Olivia, Liam, Jackie Lynn, Ruby, Jack, Foster and Sumner. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. She will be remembered as a gracious lady, devoted mother and grandmother. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. John’s United Methodist Church. A tribute to her life here on earth will be conducted on Wednesday, November 16 at the church at 2:00 PM as she rejoices with family, friends and her faithful friend Kayak who have gone on before. Dr. Susie Fitch-Slater will conduct the service at St. John’s United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Ellis Gray Burial Ground. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made to the building fund St. John’s United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 129, Avon, NC 27915. Twiford’s Island Chapel, Hatteras, is assisting the family with these arrangements.
