Kal was born in Audubon, MN, to John and Hulda Kalvik. A brother, Arvid and two sisters preceded him in death. After boot camp he was assigned to various ships and shore duty, and made chief in 1952. His fondest memory of his navy career was serving almost five years on President Truman’s yacht, the USS Williamsburg. He not only loved the President, but the tour of duty as well. In February they would have celebrated fifty years together. Kal started his harbor piloting career as a chief in Yakosuka, Japan and completed all the necessary qualifications to be awarded a harbor pilot’s license. He was hired by the Department of Defense and sent to Subic Bay, Philippines in 1966. He also served five years in Guam. After Guam he came back to Norfolk, VA, and retired from civil service in 1982. Kal was a life member of the VFW, a member of the Fleet Reserve, CPOA, and a past member of Pine Lakes Country Club. Besides his wife, Eva, he leaves a daughter Carol, of 1004 Kayla Court, Elizabeth City, NC; a favorite nephew, Jerry Kalvik of Fargo, ND; two sisters-in-law, Ode Kalvik of Moorhead, MN, and Agnes Leiphon of Kearney NB; and several nieces and nephews.
