Obituary of Ivie Lister

IVIE JACOB LISTER Chesapeake-Ivie Lister, 87, son of Israel and Elizabeth Corbet Lister, passed away in his sleep on Friday morning, November 16th in his home. Born in Pasquotank County, North Carolina on November 28, 1919. Ivie was one of nine children. An alumni of Georgia Tech, he joined the U. S. Navy as a pilot in World War II, flying patrol aircraft until leaving to help with the family business in the late 1950s. Ivie started his own graphics company, Norfolk Screen Print, and became one of the primary printers of military base access stickers and custom bumper stickers on the East Coast. When he closed up shop in the late 1980s, Ivie bought a very rough 1953 ‘R’ Type Bentley Countryman as a retirement project. At age 69, he taught himself how to stitch leather, carve and refinish wood components, and paint, doing all of the work himself in his garage. The result was an award-winning restoration that won him recognition from the Rolls-Royce/Bentley Club and the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA). In 1996 he became co-editor of the AACA Tidewater Region’s newsletter, for which he also served as a photographer and writer. Ivie earned nine consecutive National Awards from AACA and received the Golden Quill Award from the national publication Old Car Weekly this year. Possessed of a quick wit and generous nature, Ivie was a fixture at local car shows, setting up court beside the Bentley with his beloved Yorkie ‘Benny.’ More than one event field had the best spot reserved for ‘Benny’s car,’ and Ivie often referred to himself as the ‘chauffer.’ He remained active in the car hobby to the end. Ivie is survived by one sister, Sarah Elizabeth Lister Naujoks Hartzel, 18 nieces and nephews, as well as many great nieces and nephews, He also leaves behind a great many friends. Viewing is Monday Night at 7 to 8:30 pm at Twifords Colonial Chapel on Battlefield Blvd., with a service Tuesday at the graveside at 3 pm, Riverside Cemetery.
