Obituary of Herbert Hawkins

Major Herbert H. Hawkins (FBI Ret.) 72, on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at his residence, with his family by his side, after a long battle with cancer. Herb was born on August 4, 1937, in New York City, NY to the late Lt. Col. Herbert H. Hawkins, Sr. (Ret.) and Helen Bofferding. He attended NYC and California schools, graduating from Camp Lejeune High School and received his BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959. He attained his Master's Degree from Wichita State University in 1976. Upon graduation from UNC, he enter the U.S. Marine Corp. as a second Lieutenant and served throughout the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia. Herb was highly decorated, receiving numerous personal decorations, including a Purple Heart with a gold star while in serving in Vietnam as a Rifle Company Commander. He entered on duty with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on August 10, 1969 as a Special Agent. He served in Houston, Kansas City, FBI Headquarters (Washington D.C.), San Antonio (Austin RA), and Las Vegas (Assistant Agent in Charge). He was assigned to the Inspection Staff and later assigned to Omaha as Special Agent in Charge (SAC) and retired in Phoenix (SAC) in August of 1989. Herb was a member of the Lions Club and Rotary Club International. He served as a board member of the Little League in 1976 in Virginia and of the Marine’s Memorial Club (San Francisco) from 1968 – 1969. Following his FBI retirement, Herb was an avid golfer living in Scottsdale, AZ, where he worked as a Realtor specializing in commerical real estate investments with Hawkins Group Realty. When he moved to Southern Shores, he continued his love for golf with his dear friends at Duck Woods Country Club. Mr. Hawkins is survived by his wife, Wendy Soujanen Hawkins; three daughters, Holly Jackson (Cole), Heather Hawthorne (Brian), and Heidi Sublette (Scott); three sons, Herbert Hawkins (Rachel), Mike Hawkins (Allie), and Jeffery Hawkins; two step-daughters, Elizabeth Reynolds and Heidi Daigle, 6 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and his sister, Helen Cathcart. Herb was an honorable, kind, and giving man. A Memorial Service will be held, in his honor, at 4:00 pm on Friday, June 18, 2010 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 40 Pintail Drive, Southern Shores, NC 27949 with Father Tom Wilson officiating. Interment of Cremains, with full honors, will occur at Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 1:00 pm. Twiford Funeral Homes’ Colony Chapel, Manteo, NC is assisting the family with arrangements.
