One normally remembers just a few teachers from high school..most just fade into the past. Elva was one of my inspirational mentors who made an impression the first day of school in biology class. She took an interest in my still formulating thoughts about natural history and teaching others about it..The first week of school she took me to Long Branch Nature Center where I got to be a volunteer for the next three years..She was an inspiraing teacher who clearly loved the subject but more than that, she loved the students. Her infectious personality made the class for all who were lucky to have her.
I think of her as I now am in her position..after twenty years as a naturalist for various parks and land trusts, I joined the faculty of Unity College in Maine as teacher of parks and forest resources. for the past 14 years I have tried to inspire the like students just like she did for me..
My sincerest condolences to her family. I am sure you miss her energy and love every day of the year

I will always remember Elva, her bright smile, ready laugh and wonderful melodious voice. I shared many interests with her, including a love of orchids, gardening, environmental science, and books, and I learned a great deal from her. I always envied her students who must have flourished under such a wonderful teacher. I miss her greatly.

My Grammy was the most amazing grandmother I could have ever dreamed of being blessed with. I also had the great fortune of having Grammy as my Godmother and the pleasure of learning about faith and the Lord through a woman who embraced her own faith so gracefully and inspirationally. I will forever remember her laugh and her smile and her reading Brer Rabbit/Uncle Remus to us when we were children and all the wonderful summers spent in Nags Head with she and my Grampy. I think that in my heart I thought she would go on forever and although she is gone physically, she will still remain in my thoughts and memories for the rest of my days. I thank the Lord for blessing us with this angel on earth and for allowing my children to have met this amazing and beautiful woman. I love you more than words Grammy and miss you dearly.

Please know that we have your family in our thoughts. I never knew of Elva’s accomplishments throughout her life and reading of them allowed me to understand more of the graceful way she had about her. I will miss seeing Elva’s smiling face on her visits.

Aunt Elva epitomized the gentlewoman. Whatever task or role she took on, she completed it with class and grace. I will always remember the great New Year’s Day buffet she would prepare as the family gathered to cheer on the Ohio State “Buckwheats” and occasionally our Maryland Terrapins. Our family is thankful the Lord allowed us some time with her as she prepared for her home-going. I know Bruce, Duncan, Becky, and their families will sorely miss their loving mother, but they can be assured she is in the presence of her loving, eternal Father.

Aunt Elva was much more than just an ‘aunt’ to me and my six siblings. As the offspring of her youngest brother, Orlo Dayton, she became both a father and a mother figure to us after losing our own parents. We are all much better for having had the blessing of Aunt Elva’s nurturing care.

I loved Elva very much, as did my mother – they were 2nd cousins. I visited Elva at the Outer Banks a number of times – she was a wonderful lady, very fascinating to talk with, so warm-hearted and genuine.
I also visited her in Columbus in June when she was in Rehab. We sat in the sun, walked, watched the news, talked about everything from the oil spill to politics to family history to literature. She and I never ran out of conversation. I’m so glad I saw her then.

I met Elva when my Mom became ill. She was a dear friend and very helpful and supportive as a neighbor, friend, and sister in Christ. Mom has been praying for her during her illness and saddened that she couldn’t communicate with her. I feel blessed to have met her. We send God’s blessings to the family.

Aunt Elva was a remarkable woman. She had such great courage, determination, and enthusiasm for all of life’s blessings.
When our parents died, she enveloped my 6 siblings and I (and our spouses and children) with all the love and memories we might otherwise have missed. She taught us all so much about science, gardening, cooking, our family geneaology, Scottish prayers and nurtured our own love of learning and encouraging our commitment to serving God and the community. Thank you to her children and grandchildren for sharing her with so many others. We will miss our beloved Aunt Elva.

I regret that I did not realize how much Elva and I had in common and to be able to discuss our experiences when we could have. I too was involved in laboratory instruction (plant physiology) while a professor at Kansas State university and then moving on to laboratory studies in genetics of human cells in PA. After moving to Virginia in 1989 and working in Georgetown on safety evaluation of pesticides in foods for many years, I may have filled a void in Arlington in 1997 when Elva left and I was working for a health consulting with a company about a 3 minute walk from Marymount University that Elva may have just left!
After arriving in Southern Shores in 2006 my wife and I had the privilege to meet Elva as we both became involved in the Dare county Master Gardener program and my wife became involved with the SS garden club where Elva was a highly enthusiastic supporter. As Elva’s health declined, my wife was actively involved in ensuring that her driving needs were helped by many members of the SS garden club who also loved and cherished Elva.
Elva sat in the row of seats directly in front of us at the Outer Banks Forum. We would always meet and talk with her at each performance. I have now been given the privilege of becoming part of the Forum board of directors in a position a bit less complicated than Elva’s. However, I will try my best to honor Elva’s work with the OBX Forum in my future efforts.
I will miss you Elva and your possible tutoring efforts in gardening in the OBX and OBX Forum work. Most of all, I truly regret that I did decided not disturb you and your nurse when I delivered those tomatoes when she was there taking your BP after your initial surgery….that is a conversation we did not have and I apologize.
