Obituary of George Henry 'Poppy' Simmons
SIMMONS, George Henry 'Poppy' - 76, Louisdale, passed away peacefully after a brief illness in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Thursday, April 21, 2005. Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Thomas and Eileen (Arsenault) Simmons. George was a fisherman and well driller in his early years and later became a carpenter and a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1588. He was a member of St. Louis Parish, Louisdale. Surviving are son, Kevin (Amelia), Glace Bay; daughters, Brenda (Clifford) Smith, Port Hawkesbury; Arlene (Alan) Foley, Glace Bay; sister, Dianne (Bernard) MacRury, Glace Bay; brothers, Allan (Belle), Leo (Karen), all of Glace Bay; Leonard (Myrna), Port Hawkesbury; brother-in-law, Jim Ford, Glace Bay; grandchildren, Stephen (Alicia), Shaun (Crystal), Aaron, Alison, Mallory; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla; brother, Roy; sister-in-law, Ruth; sister, Sheila.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Glen Sampson Memorial Room, St. Louis Church, Louisdale. Funeral mass will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday in St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Father Gary MacPherson officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of George may be made to the Seaview Manor Corporation, Glace Bay, or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury.
