Obituary of Annie Belle MacDonald

MacDONALD (MacLennan), Annie Belle - Nana Mickey passed away peacefully at home at the age of 96, on Saturday, March 19, 2005. Annie was born in Chimney Corner, Inverness Co., a daughter of the late Simon Rory and Mary Anne (MacLellan) MacLennan. She attended Provincial Normal School, Truro, in 1923 at the age of 15 years to pursue her love for teaching. She taught for nine years in one-room schools in Chimney Corner, Bay St. Lawrence, Dingwall, Giant's Lake, Mulgrave, and Cleveland, where she met and married her husband of 50 years, Michael MacDonald, who predeceased her in 1982. Annie substituted in Port Hawkesbury schools as she brought up her family of four, who survive her. Surviving are daughters, Margaret Hart, Anne Stone, Mary (Dr. Royden) Trainor, and son, Lennan (Irma) MacDonald; her special niece, Florence MacDonald-Cameron (Doug). Mother was blessed with her family, being all residents of Port Hawkesbury. Also surviving are 16 beloved grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Zena Saule, New Waterford; sister-in-law, Jessie MacLennan, Chimney Corner; numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was predeceased by grandsons in infancy, John Clifford Trainor and Hugh Mark MacDonald; son-in-law, Donald Hart; brothers, Hugh, Angus, Roddie; sister, Kaye Farquhar. Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, with vigil service at 8:30 p.m., both in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Father Bill Crispo officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory of Nana Mickey may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Port Hawkesbury Food Bank or a charity of choice.
