Obituary of John Charles 'Jack' MacKenzie
MacKENZIE, John Charles 'Jack' - 59, died suddenly at home on June 2, 2005. He is survived by his mother, Gertrude L. MacKenzie, and his only daughter, Christine.
Also surviving are his loving companion of 17 years, Patricia Rhynold, and her children and grandsons: Christopher Smith, Antigonish, Jennifer King (Michael), Canso, and Colbi and Jacob King. Jack was predeceased by his father, Harold M. 'Hal' MacKenzie, and by his only brother, Gurth Maxwell.
In his youth he was a keen hockey player and he was a faithful fan of the Montreal Canadiens. He served a term in the Canadian Armed Forces and was stationed at C.F.B. Gagetown, N.B. He spent most of his life in Canso where he was well-known and loved. He was an adherent of St. Paul's United Church. Jack was a volunteer fireman for 25 years, an instructor with the Sea Cadets, and a Charter member of the Lion's Club.
A welder by trade, he worked in numerous locations. In recent years he worked aboard oil rigs in Halifax Harbour, off Sable Island, in Portland, Maine, and in Brazil. All his life he loved the outdoors, and in particular he loved to go trout fishing and stay at his wilderness camp with friends.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation and memorial service will be in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home in Canso. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 5. Service will be Monday, June 6, at 11 a.m. followed by interment in the family plot in Fourth Hill Cemetery.
